RAFT Event Calendar

This workshop models best practices of experiential education through hands-on activities. Participants will learn how to set-up their youth for success on trips, the basic logistics of planning an outdoor trip with youth, the keys to group management, and strategies for collaboration and creating organizational buy-in. Specific activities include building a tent as a team, packing a camping backpack with materials/equipment ideal for specific environments, creating a resource "spiderweb", creating community agreement, and group management activities. This workshop will inspire educators of all grade levels to go beyond the walls of the classroom and expand the learning to include experiences with nature.

Laser cutting machines help to create many customized items by using laser technology to etch, engrave, and cut through a wide variety of materials. For example, laser cutters are used to create math manipulatives, puzzles, create and etch graphic designs, etc. This workshop gives participants the knowledge and practice required to safely operate the machine on their own and provides an understanding of the different pieces of hardware through short discussions and hands-on experiences. Participants will calibrate and configure the machine for different tasks and materials appropriate for classroom use. Participants who complete the training will be certified to use the machine.

One-stroke painting is a technique done with acrylic paint and a flat, stiff brush. The brush is double loaded with 2 colors of paint which gives us shading, blending, and hi-lighting all in one stroke for an efficient and vibrant work of art. Students can create elegant and complex artwork that can be part of any content theme. This workshop is ideal for both beginners and returning students; all are welcome! Please bring an apron or wear an old shirt as well as your enthusiasm for this fun and relaxing experience.
