Teaching Content through Design

Teaching Content through Design

This workshop focuses on the development of lessons that teach students specific concepts in language arts, science, social studies, art, and math using the engineering design process as the medium. Participants will learn and experience different activities that teach students the steps of the design process. They will co-develop a mini-lesson that targets a concept within a content area that allows students to design and produce an original product to demonstrate proficiency. Participants will leave the workshop with lesson ideas and lots of goodies!

Personal Logos Using Symbols

Personal Logos Using Symbols

Humans expressed themselves and communicated with symbols long before there were alphabets. Modern logos can leave powerful impressions. Students will be guided toward expressing their own distinct characteristics. After designing a personal logo, we'll carve the image into an easy to use block printing product. Then we can print multiples. A playful handout with famous and not so famous logos will begin with guessing and then a discussion about why the best logos communicate so well. Then hundreds of symbols from many world cultures will be available for inspiration. Extra colored paper stock provided for teachers' classrooms, as well as cultural hand outs and directions for block printing. This workshop is perfect for beginning and veteran teachers alike!
