RAFT Idea Sheet Series: Focus on Applied Mathematics in Science

RAFT Idea Sheet Series: Focus on Applied Mathematics in Science

Re-purposing materials is the heart of innovation at RAFT. Over the years RAFT has created hundreds idea sheets, which are standards-aligned instructions for teaching hands-on activities that focus on specific subject area topics and embrace the creative use of materials. They are meant to serve students in a range of grades depending on the educational objectives of the user. Participants will learn how to conduct several RAFT activities that focus on a variety of science concepts that require mathematics to analyze, explain, model, etc. For example, one activity will model collecting, analyzing, and graphing species data by obtaining samples from a model habitat. The activities will vary in both grade level and complexity, providing teachers with lots of strategies for differentiating each activity to accommodate a range of skills.

(Continued) Makerspace Development: Teaching in the Space

(Continued) Makerspace Development: Teaching in the Space

A makerspace is, at its heart, a studio. It is a place for students to create; a place in which people can gather to work on projects while sharing ideas, equipment, and knowledge. Teaching within a makerspace is a perfect opportunity to nurture and encourage student-driven learning, and guide students to develop mindsets necessary in being an active creator and maker. In this workshop, participants will look at a variety of activities and projects to help students develop their maker mindsets, as well as manage the space and materials.
