Modeling Connections between Next Generation Science and Common Core Math Practices

Modeling Connections between Next Generation Science and Common Core Math Practices

The needs of the 21st century require solutions from innovative people who possess practical scientific and mathematical knowledge and the necessary skills to apply it. Mathematicians, scientists, and engineers are connected through the activities they do within their disciplines. This workshop focuses on the connections between the math, science, and engineering practices embedded within the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM). The instructors will demonstrate how to identify specific practices using RAFT activities and then model how to build meaningful connections between the practices in science, math, and engineering. Participants will learn to identify the practices and provide examples of their application through hands-on activities, group discussion, and other useful tools.

The Sweet Side of Chemistry--Candy (Mission College, Chemistry Building, in Santa Clara)

The Sweet Side of Chemistry--Candy (Mission College, Chemistry Building, in Santa Clara)

Join the Santa Clara Valley Section of the American Chemical Society to celebrate National Chemistry Week 2014 with the chemistry of candy and confections. We all love a sweet treat, but rarely do we discuss the chemistry involved. Whether it's hard candy, chocolate, or taffy, the sugars and ingredients within undergo a transformation in its properties that result in the delicious treats we enjoy.

Hands-on activities, a curriculum binder, and supplies for the classroom will be provided in this fast-moving, entertaining, workshop. NO chemistry background required! A continental breakfast and lunch with featured guest speaker, "Dr. Chocolate", will be included. (Chocolate-tasting, too!)

Registration is limited. Please register early and no later than October 1.

Cereal Box Books

Cereal Box Books

We will make a book out of a small cereal box, and kids absolutely love this. We will also make at least 4 other unusual book structures that are loved by children and teachers everywhere including one for Halloween.

These structures can be used for a variety of subjects. We will also include a quick and easy 10-minute drawing lesson that you can teach students so they will feel more confident in story-writing.
