RAFT Laser Cutter Certification Course

Laser cutting machines help to create many customized items by using laser technology to etch, engrave, and cut through a wide variety of materials. For example, laser cutters are used to create math manipulatives, puzzles, create and etch graphic designs, etc. This workshop gives participants the knowledge and practice required to safely operate the machine on their own and provides an understanding of the different pieces of hardware through short discussions and hands-on experiences. Participants will calibrate and configure the machine for different tasks and materials appropriate for classroom use. Participants who complete the training will be certified to use the machine.

Fabricated Nightstand Portraits Hack-a-thon

Fabricated Nightstand Portraits Hack-a-thon

In this unique design-focused session, participants research and communicate portraits as a form of biography, explore a design cycle, identifying and empathizing with a subject to design a representation and utilitarian tool for beside their bed. Specifically, they will design and build physical or virtual models of a customized nightstand with a lamp using wood, cardboard, LEDs, and basic electronics. Participants will communicate their artistic representations to a peer or facilitator. Strategies for using this set of activities with students will be discussed and modeled for participants. This workshop is offered in partnership with Krause Center for Innovation Underground Makerspace at Foothill College and EnCorps STEM Teachers Fellowship.
